The Neon City

The megalopolis is a nightmare of rain and concrete, tangled cables and flashing screens. And traffic. Neon signs are everywhere. The crowd leaves no respite. Only if you turn in the maze of humid secondary roads you can be alone, surrounded by dirt. There, sometimes, you can meet some winos annihilated by cyber-alcohol. Skyscrapers are so high that you can’t see their end. The sky is always covered by a thick and dense fog, which causes thin and never ending rain. You will never see the sun in Kowloon: clouds are crossed by the highest towers, which go through them approaching Olympus, the city of the Elected. Over there, it is said, you can feel the sunrays but the inhabitants of Kowloon are not allowed to reach the highest floors. In Kowloon people live in a dark, humid and endless night. Humans usually have robotic body parts and a chip that contains the soul: you can surf the big web and exchange memories, experiences and identities.

La città è un incubo di cemento e lamiera, cavi aggrovigliati e schermi luminosi. E traffico. La folla è ovunque e non lascia tregua. Solo svoltando nel dedalo di cunicoli umidi ci si può isolare in mezzo alla sporcizia, incrociando derelitti che si annientano di cyber-alcool.
I grattacieli sono talmente alti che non se ne vede la fine e non è possibile scorgere il cielo: una fitta e densa nebbia, che causa una pioggia leggera e perenne, viene inforcata dalle torri più alte, che la attraversano fino a giungere ad Olympus, la città degli Eletti. Lì pare sia possibile vedere il sole ma agli abitanti di Kowloon non è consentito salire così in alto. A Kowloon si vive in una notte buia, umida e senza fine. Gli umani hanno parti del corpo robotizzate e un chip che contine l’anima: essa può vagare nella grande rete e scambiare ricordi, esperienze, identità.

Cheng is a smuggler of memories. In a secluded alley, a boy called Tao is buying a micro-chip from Cheng. It contains the memory fragments of a Japanese punk thug. After purchasing it, Tao shoots immediately the ram in his brain. He strikes. Then he asks Cheng to find more life memories of this Japanese thug named “Yumikes”, the singer of a Japanese punk band called “Fuck Geez”. They were active from 1982 to 1989.

Cheng è un contrabbandiere di ricordi. In un vicolo appartato, un ragazzo di nome Tao acquista un micro-chip da Cheng. Contiene i frammenti della memoria di cinque anni di un teppista giapponese. A strange man in a bar

Cheng is riding his motorcycle: he has to meet Xiong, his supplier, to get a new pack of memories. Along with Cheng is Mei, a cyborg girl from his friends gang. Xiong waits for them at the counter of a street bar. He watches the passing crowd. He is nervous, a drop of cold sweat runs through his temples as he takes a sip at his glass of cyber-alcohol. The boys arrive. A short greeting. The exchange takes place quickly, the data are stored in Cheng’s external memory. Mei, however, while the exchange takes place, quickly scans the data and perceives that something is wrong. Xiong takes the money and tells that, as agreed, there are also memories of the Fuck Geez’s singer, Yumikes. He gets up and quickly greets the two boys, who observe him surprised by such haste. Xiong walks into the crowd, fading quickly. He turns in a dark alley. Sheltered by curious eyes and ears, he says these words: “Now can I have the Olympus pass?”. An unknown metallic voice answers: “Of course”. A noise of pierced flesh and a slight moan.

Cheng sta guidando la sua moto: deve incontrare Xiong, il suo fornitore, che gli deve dare un nuovo pacchetto di ricordi da rivendere. Con Cheng c'è Mei, una ragazza cyborg che fa parte della sua gang. Xiong li aspetta in un bar aperto sulla strada, seduto al bancone. E’ nervoso, una riga di sudore freddo gli solca le tempie mentre dà un sorso al suo bicchiere di cyber-alcool. I ragazzi arrivano. Pochi convenevoli. Lo scambio avviene rapidamente, i dati vengono immagazzinati nella memoria esterna di Cheng. Mei però, mentre lo scambio avviene, scansiona superficialmente i dati e percepisce che qualcosa non va. Xiong prende rapidamente i soldi e assicura che, come da accordi, nei dati ci sono anche cinque anni di Yumikes, il cantante dei Fuck Geez. Dopodichè si alza e liquida rapidamente i due ragazzi, che però lo osservano insospettiti da tanta fretta. Xiong si incammina tra la folla facendo perdere le sue tracce. Svolta in un vicolo buio. Al riparo da occhi e orecchie indiscrete, parla: “Ora posso avere il pass per Olympus?”. E una voce metallica gli risponde: “Certo”. Segue un rumore di carne trafitta e un lieve gemito.

Tao is sitting in an alley. He has just met Cheng who sold him Yumikes’ memory. He is very excited and, slowly, is preparing to copy files into his brain. The experience is fantastic. But a sinister shadow appears behind him. The boy has closed eyes, he doesn’t notice the dark presence. But then he opens his eyes. He suddenly falls back and crawls up to a wall in a filthy alley. “Who are you? Who the hell are you?”. Then an inhuman scream and a horrible noise of pierced flesh follow.

Tao è seduto in un vicolo. Ha appena incontrato Cheng che gli ha venduto la memoria di Yumikes. E’ molto emozionato e, lentamente, si prepara a copiarsi nel cervello i files. L’esperienza è fantastica. Ma, dietro di lui compare un’ombra sinistra. Il ragazzo ha gli occhi chiusi, non se ne accorge. Ma ad un certo punto spalanca le palpebre e, terrorizzato, cade all’indietro, strisciando fino ad un muro nel vicolo lurido. “Chi sei? Chi diavolo sei?”. Segue un urlo disumano e rumore orribile di carne trafitta.

Mei tells Cheng to be careful with the new Xiong’s stuff. She asks him to let her scan it for malware. The operation is dangerous because, while scanning corrupted data, she could become infected. For this reason, Cheng tells Mei to forget about it: Xiong’s stuff has always been good and, anyway, it’s a matter of those who buy it. So he washes his hands. In fact, Cheng is fond of Mei and he prefers that she doesn’t get too involved in his activity, because it’s illegal and dangerous. Then, for this time, he doesn’t even want problems with the goods, as he quickly needs money to install a new automatic driving system on his motorcycle. Mei, however, is smarter and manages to back up the files during a moment of distraction of Cheng while he is talking to his friends gang. A few hours later, in the darkness of her room, Mei proceeds with the scan: there is something strange about a mysterious file that she cannot open. After a while Mei is weirdly not feeling well...

Mei dice a Cheng di stare attento col materiale che ha ricevuto e gli chiede se può attuarne una scansione approfondita alla ricerca di malware. L’operazione è pericolosa perché scansionando i dati si potrebbe rimanere infettati. Per questa ragione Cheng dice a Mei di lasciar perdere: il materiale di Xiong è sempre stato buono e tanto poi sono affari di chi li compra, lui se ne lava le mani. In realtà Cheng vuole bene a Mei e preferisce che non si immischi troppo nella sua attività, dato che è illegale e pericolosa. Poi, per questa volta, non vuole nemmeno problemi con la merce, dato che ha bisogno in fretta di soldi per installare un nuovo sistema di guida automatica sulla sua moto. Mei però è più furba e riesce a copia i files durante un attimo di distrazione di Cheng mentre parla con i suoi amici della banda. Qualche ora dopo, nel buio della sua stanza, Mei procede con la scansione: c'è qualcosa di strano riguardo a un files misterioso che non si riesce ad aprire. Dopo qualche istante, Mei inizia a non sentirsi bene...

However Cheng remembers Mei’s warning and contacts his customers to know if the memories he sold them were good. He was able to implement the motorcycle and he is impatient to show it to Mei. But nobody answers him. And Mei also seems disappeared. Suspicious, Cheng wanders through the city. He goes into his customers houses and finds them dead one by one: they have terrified expressions on their blood-covered faces. The most macabre detail concerns the eyes: they were both pulled by their ruthless murderer. In a dark and filthy alley, he runs into Tao’s body. He was killed in the same way, but he is still agonizing. Cheng approaches and asks him what has happened. Tao, with a last effort before dying, writes a mental message to Cheng: “The pale god of Kowloon”. Cheng perceives a presence in the shadow of the alley. He shouts “Who are you, bastard?!”. A battered neon sign that was off has a last intermittent flash and illuminates, for an instant, the face of the killer, who soon disappears.

Cheng, ricordandosi delle preoccupazioni di Mei, contatta i suoi clienti per sapere com’è andata con i ricordi che gli ha venduto. E’ riuscito ad implementare la moto ed è impaziente di farla vedere ad Mei. Ma dei suoi clienti, nessuno gli risponde. E anche Mei sembra scomparsa. Insospettito, Cheng vaga per la città nei luoghi frequentati dai suoi clienti. Va nelle case e trova ad uno ad uno i suoi clienti morti: hanno espressioni terrorizzate sul volto coperto di sangue. Il particolare più macabro riguarda gli occhi: sono stati entrambi cavati dal loro spietato assassino. In un vicolo buio e lurido, si imbatte nel corpo di Tao, seduto per terra con la schiena appoggiata al muro. Anche lui è stato aggredito allo stesso modo, ma il fatto sembra appena accaduto perché Tao è ancora agonizzante. Cheng si avvicina e gli chiede cosa sia successo. Tao, con un ultimo sforzo prima di spegnersi, scrive un messaggio mentale a Cheng: “Il dio pallido di Kowloon”. Cheng percepisce una presenza nell’ombra del vicolo e grida “Bastardo, chi sei?”. Un insegna scassata al neon che sembrava spenta ha un ultimo sussulto intermittente e illumina per un attimo il volto del killer, che subito dopo scompare.

The chase in the slums

Cheng runs into the alley to chase the mysterious killer. He thinks to see him running ahead of him, like a shadow. He goes at breakneck speed in the filthy alleys of Kowloon, dodging trash and some winos. On a big road, he jumps on his motorcycle that has driven alone up to there, thanks to the new automatic system. In the saddle on the motorcycle, he chases a black car in the fierce highway traffic. Cheng finally reaches the car. He opens it and shouts: “Come out bastard!”. A middle-aged, terrified man comes out of the car, asking for forgiveness. It is clearly a misunderstanding: Cheng figures out that he has pursued someone who has nothing to do with his story. And he curses.

Cheng corre nel vicolo, deciso ad inseguire il killer misterioso. Crede di vederlo correre davanti a lui, come un’ombra. Si lancia a perdifiato nei vicoli sudici di Kowloon, scansando spazzatura e qualche derelitto che si ammazza di cyber-alcool. Sbucato su una grande strada, salta sulla sua moto che nel frattempo ha guidato da sola fino a lì, grazie al nuovo sistema automatico che ha implementato. In sella sulla moto, insegue un’automobile scura. Sfreccia sulle highway nel traffico feroce, inseguendo un'automobile nera. Cheng finalmente riesce ad affiancare l’auto e grida: “Esci bastardo!”. Dall’auto esce un signore di mezz’età, terrorizzato, che chiede perdono. Si tratta di un equivoco: Cheng capisce di aver inseguito qualcuno che con la sua storia non c’entra nulla. E impreca.

Looking for Mei

Mei has disappeared and Cheng is worried. He sends messages on the network but he doesn’t get answers. There is no trace of her. Cheng spends long hours darting inside the huge Kowloon city with his motorcycle, looking for Mei in the physical and virtual places where she usually goes. Frustrated by this research that doesn’t seem to lead to anything, resigned, Cheng passes near the bar where they had met Xiong together. And, in the alley next door, he finally finds a clue: Mei’s helmet on the ground. It is dirty with blood and silicon, but inside there is an internal memory, still readable, with GPS coordinates, a code and a message: “hurry”.

Mei è sparita e Cheng è preoccupato. Le manda messaggi nella rete ma non ottiene risposta. Di lei non c’è traccia. Cheng passa lunghe ore a sfrecciare da una parte all’altra dell’immensa Kowloon con la sua moto, cercando Mei nei luoghi fisici e virtuali che erano soliti frequentare. Frustrato da questa ricerca che non sembra portare a nulla, ormai rassegnato, Cheng passa di nuovo vicino al bar dove avevano incontrato Xiong l’ultima volta: nel vicolo a fianco, trova finalmente un indizio: il casco di Mei appoggiato per terra. E’ sporco di sangue e silicio, dentro la memoria interna sono ancora leggibili delle coordinate gps, un codice e un messaggio: “fai presto”.

Cursing everything and everyone, Cheng gets the helmet and whizzes towards the point indicated by the coordinates: he arrives at a dirty and wet alley. There is a door: Cheng types the code and the door opens sliding to the side, showing a narrow staircase that goes down into the darkness...

Una porta: Cheng digita il codice e la porta si apre scorrendo di lato, mostrando una stretta scalinata che si scende nell’oscurità...

Mei is imprisoned by a tangle of cables in a small room lightened by the pale light of dozens of monitors on the walls. A big cable wires her back head. She looks unconscious. Cheng understands that she is in a great danger: somebody is trying to format her soul, in a virtual battle between Mei’s firewall and the unknown hacker. Cheng grabs the big cable and tries to detach it from the nape of Mei, without success. He looks around but he finds nothing. At the same time he feels determination and discouragement. He throws her helmet against one of the monitors, which is shattered by shorting the system. The cable comes off, Mei suddenly wakes up. But a threatening shadow breaks into the room...

Mei è imprigionata da un groviglio di cavi in una stanza piccola illuminata dalla luce pallida di decine di monitor appesi alle pareti. E’ cablata sulla nuca dal fascio di grossi cavi. Sembra priva di conoscenza. Cheng capisce che sta correndo un grande pericolo: il sistema al quale è cablata sta cercando di formattarle l’anima, in una battaglia virtuale tra il firewall di Mei e l’hacker sconosciuto. Cheng afferra il grosso cavo e cerca di staccarlo dalla nuca di Mei ma non ci riesce. Si guarda intorno ma non trova nulla: in un misto di determinazione e scoramento, prende il casco di lei e lo scaraventa contro uno dei monitor, che si frantuma facendo entrare in cortocircuito il sistema. Il cavo si stacca, Mei si sveglia di colpo. Ma un’ombra minacciosa fa irruzione nella stanza...

Cyborg vs cyborg

|
“The pale god of Kowloon wants your eyes”. It is the voice of the killer. Suddenly the killer’s extensible mechanical arm heads out fast to Cheng but Mei snaps and, with the lightning agility of her cyborg body, she blocks the hit. Cheng, who had no idea of the lethal potential of Mei’s cybernetic body, remains stunned. The cyborg girl and the killer fight furiously: the virtual struggle overlaps with the physical struggle, where both are trying to hacker each other. Mei screams to Cheng to escape. But Cheng does not want to leave Mei. He feels helpless in his human body. However, he notes the dangling cable that emits sparks due to the short-circuit. He takes it and, ignoring the danger, he throws it towards the killer. It’s a puerile move that the killer blocks immediately but gives Mei a short time to jump over Cheng and escape with him outside.

“Il dio pallido di Kowloon vuole i tuoi occhi”: è la voce del killer. In un attimo il suo braccio meccanico estendibile si scaglia verso Cheng ma Mei scatta e con l’agilità fulminea del suo corpo di cyborg para il colpo. Cheng, che non aveva la minima idea del potenziale letale del corpo cibernetico di Mei, rimane di stucco. La ragazza cyborg e il killer lottano furiosamente: alla lotta fisica si sovrappone la lotta virtuale, nella quale i sistemi operativi di entrambi cercano di hackerarsi a vicenda. Mei intima a Cheng di fuggire e porta il combattimento in modo da aprire un varco verso le scale. Cheng non vuole lasciare lì Mei, che sembra avere la peggio, ma si sente impotente nel suo corpo di umano. Nota però il cavo penzolante che emette scintille a causa del cortocircuito di prima. Lo imbraccia, noncurante del pericolo di rimanere fulminato, e lo scaraventa verso il killer. E’ una mossa puerile che il killer blocca immediatamente ma dà il tempo a Mei di saltare verso Cheng e di fuggire con lui all’esterno.

The two guys jump on the motorcycle and run off. As they rush along the flyovers that cross the city, the rain intensifies, becoming filthy and dense. They are not sure if the killer is chasing them or not. As rain falls heavily on the unkempt city of Kowloon, Cheng realizes that there are many things to understand about this story and perceives, with annoyance and impotence, to be a pawn in a much larger game. When both realize they are no longer chased, they pull over at the edge of a crowded street. In the middle of the crowd, panting with adrenaline for the danger just escaped, they look into each other’s eyes. Time, for both, seems to stop. Mei tells Cheng that there are many things that he does not know about her. But he interrupts her immediately. He just doesn’t care, he doesn’t care about anything. And he kisses her.

I due saltano sulla moto e sgommano via. Mentre sfrecciano sulle sopraelevate che solcano la città, la pioggia si intensifica, diventando sporca e densa. Non riescono a capire se il killer li stia inseguendo o meno. Mentre cade una fitta pioggia sulla città reietta di Kowloon, Cheng capisce che ci sono molte cose che deve capire di questa storia e percepisce, con un misto di fastidio e impotenza, di essere una pedina di un gioco molto più grande. Quando entrambi realizzano di non essere più inseguiti, accostano e si fermano sul ciglio di una strada affollata. Nel mezzo della folla, ansimanti di adrenalina per il pericolo appena scampato, si guardano negli occhi. Il tempo, per entrambi, sembra fermarsi. Mei dice a Cheng che ci sono molte cose che lui non sa di lei. Ma lui la interrompe subito. Le dice che non gli importa, non gli importa di niente. E la bacia.

“We have to disappear”. Mei and Cheng look at each other again. “I have to change our identification accounts - she says - only this way they will no longer be able to recognize us on the web: we will disappear among the folds of this city and the pale god of Kowloon will not be able to find us”. “You seemed to know him - says Cheng to Mei - It is not the first time you meet him, right?”. Mei looks down, she hesitates for a while, with a blank stare. Then she says: “Once he was my father”.

“Dobbiamo sparire”. Mei e Cheng si guardano di nuovo negli occhi. “Devo cambiare i nostri account identificativi - dice lei - solo così non potranno più riconoscerci sulla rete: spariremo tra le pieghe di questa città e il dio pallido di Kowloon non potrà trovarci”. “Tu sembravi conoscerlo - dice Cheng rivolto a Mei - Non è la prima volta che lo incontri vero?”. Mei abbassa lo sguardo, esita per un istante fissando il vuoto. Poi dice: “Un tempo era mio padre”.
